Raising a Happy Red Poodles: Must-Have Gear
Raising a red moyen poodle, or any dog for that matter, requires a collection of essential items to ensure their comfort, safety, and happiness. From grooming tools to cozy beds, here’s a comprehensive list of must-haves for every poodle owner, complete with affiliate links and YouTube tutorials for some items.
SLICKER BRUSHES
Slicker brushes are used to remove tangles, knots, and loose fur from a pets coat. The fine wire bristles gently detangle without causing discomfort, making them ideal for maintaining a pets fur and preventing mats. I like the Hertzko Self Cleaning slicker brush because you just push the button and the tines retract and the hair falls off, easy peasy. I also like the “Smalldog Official Dog hair brush” for the puppies and mini’s.
CRATES
Dog crates, also known as kennels or cages, provide a secure and comfortable space for dogs. These enclosed areas mimic a den-like environment, offering dogs a
sense of security and a place to retreat. Crates can aid in house training, travel safety, and giving dogs a space to relax.
When introduced properly, crates become a positive space that dogs willingly use and enjoy. I only use Midwest Home crates. I have many of them, my Moyens are in 36” and the Mini’s in 30”. They stay in them at night. The crate with
divider is great for puppies. Puppies normally don’t go potty where they sleep. When starting crate training you can reduce the size of the sleeping area until they are trained. I
have covers for all of them which makes them feel safe and secure at night.
BEDS
Dog beds provide a cozy and comfortable space for
our furry friends to rest and relax. A well-chosen dog bed offers support for their joints and muscles while promoting better sleep. For small breeds, a plush cushy bed, like The Original Calming Donut Dog Bed, can provide a sense of security. My puppies all love this bed and just snuggle in when they are tired. Larger breeds might enjoy the Bedsure Orthopedic
Bed, featuring durable fabric, zip off cover, and bolster. I have several of these beds and my dogs love them. It comes
in all sizes.
DETANGLERS
Say goodbye to pesky tangles with this specialized detangler tool for dogs, Pets First Professional Detangler. It smoothly works through knots, leaving your furry
friends coat soft and knot-free. Make grooming a breeze and keep your pets fur looking fabulous. I love this one, easy to hold and the knots come out quickly.
I also use a spray detangler whenever there is a snag. You can use it between grooming but I use it during grooming when there are tough tangles. I love Cowboy Magic Detangler for both my dogs and horses.
FORCED AIR DRYER
A dog hair dryer is a specialized tool designed to quickly and efficiently dry a dogs coat after bathing or a rainy outdoor adventure. I use this one for my grooming and have been very happy with the results.
HARNESSES
Dog harnesses are essential tools for safe and comfortable walks with your furry friend. Unlike collars, harnesses distribute pressure across a dogs body, reducing strain on the neck and preventing potential injury. I like the
Amtar Dog Harnesses, they come in all sizes and multiple colors. I also like the Voyager adjustable vests and the Pet Safe Easy Walk no pull harnesses.
LEASHES
Dog leashes are essential tools for controlling and
guiding dogs during walks and outings. The Mayhaw Heavy Duty Leashes are my favorites. They come in ½ and ¼” thicknesses, lots of colors and patterns and lengths. I love the hand grip, it saves my hand if a dog decides to go the
other way.
FOOD AND WATER DISHES
When selecting a dog food bowl it is important to consider the size and material. Choose a bowl
that is appropriate for your dogs breed and size. For larger breeds, choose a deeper bowl to prevent spillage. Stainless steel bowls are a popular choice due to their durability, resistance to bacteria, and ease of cleaning. Here are some suggestions for various situations:

For larger dog breeds, elevated food and water bowls can offer several benefits. These raised bowls promote better posture during eating and drinking, which can aid in digestion and reduce strain on neck and joints. They are particularly useful for senior dogs with arthritis. When choosing an elevated bowl make sure it’s at a comfortable height for your dog, allowing them to reach the bowl without stretching too much.<

SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Dog shampoos are specially formulated cleansing products designed to maintain the hygiene and health of your canine companions coat and skin. I have a favorite brand, Nootie. They have various smells (I love “Sweet Pea and Vanilla”). They also have a Puppy Tearless Shampoo/Conditioner in “Sweet Dreams”. I use that for all my dogs when washing their faces.
SURGERY ONESIE
This is an excellent alternative to e-collars,
especially for puppies. Easy to get on and off, ideal for spay and
neuters.

This is an excellent alternative to e-collars, especially for puppies. Fuamey has a large selection of prints and sizes. Easy to get on and off, ideal for spay and neuters. Some does do well with this but others aren’t happy with anything. After surgery we can all be pretty cranky.
TOYS

These are some of my puppies and dogs favorites:
HOUNDGAMES Puppy Toy Mat- my puppies play with this for hours. They drag it around, lay under it, chew on the attached toys, etc.
PET OWERKS Talking Babble Ball – I got one of these for a new puppy. The first few days he would go the other way when it made sounds. Now he puts it in his bed, keeps it with him when he plays with other toys. Slight movement activates it and he
acts like it is a buddy that is talking to him. Comes in different sizes and four different sounds. Big hit.
HYPER PET Mini Tennis Balls – Puppies love to carry these around with them. They seem to like the feel of the fuzz on a tennis ball. I don’t like using regular tennis balls because they can easily rip the fuzz off of those. These balls are sturdier and, in my opinion, safer for puppies. Different colors and quantities available.
There are some great puppy packs with multiple toys for a reasonable price. I like this one because there is a large assortment and they are sturdy. I use these when I have a litter and need multiple toys. Most of them last from litter to litter.
MISCELLANEOUS
Washable diapers for males and females. I prefer the washable one over the disposable. Large assortment of patterns and sizes.
WEGREECO Female Washable Diapers – First, I love the fun patterns!! I have a supply of these that I have had for a long time. Throw them in the washer and dryer and store.
MKONO Male Dog Belly Band Wraps – Quite often intact males will lift their leg in the home. These diapers will save a lot of clean up. As with the female diapers, just wash, dry and store.
